The world has changed, and so has India. Modi, who started his international outings almost as a pariah, has both understood and strategically underlined these truths.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s foreign travels have been the subject of much derision as well as heartburn. And, like everything else about Modi’s five-year tenure, there is no balanced scorecard for his foreign policy track record.

Of course, there is a long list of perceived failures and faux pas. Equally, Modi has boasted of raising India’s stature on the global stage and the value of the Indian passport at foreign immigration checks.
But there has been little objective assessment.
This is hardly surprising.
Our foreign policy commentariat is dominated by retired mandarins of the erstwhile establishment and analysts of the post-Cold War era, who were highly influenced by the American narrative in a unipolar world. Even the turmoil in the Middle East and the rise of Islamic terror were seen largely through spectacles borrowed from Uncle Sam. Though China’s rise was imminent, it was seen more in terms of economic power — Xi had not assumed the proportions of an Asian Goliath. The insidious potential of Putin’s Russia was not realised until Trump’s election.
If Narendra Modi came to Lutyens’ Delhi and Raisina Hill as an outsider, he arrived on the international geopolitical arena almost as a pariah.
Let us not forget that he was rendered a virtual persona non-grata in the global community — and not just in the US, which had blacklisted him for a visa — by the sustained campaign of calumny by the Left and the ‘Left liberal champions’ of human rights.
Modi, therefore, had a task at hand to quickly establish his credentials with world leaders and build confidence that they could do business with him.
Undeniably, in international diplomacy, personal chemistry matters. That cannot be paid by Mastercard.
So, it is a fairly futile exercise to measure the worth of Modi’s foreign jaunts through RTI queries about his travel bills.
Narendra Modi has been the object of much mocking for serenading Xi Jinping by the Sabarmati even as Chinese soldiers were apparently pounding pellets on the border. But the counter-factual question is not asked — would the PLA have exercised greater restraint had Modi not invited Xi to India? Or, could Doklam have been averted or resolved more amicably if Modi did not have a personal acquaintance with the Chinese President?
Had this not happened, could Doklam have swung the other way?
Both China and India had messages for each other that were sent and received. Each of them knew what lessons to take out of it. If China’s intention was to show its muscles, it also realised that India was not a push-over any longer for a 1962 redux.
Of course, Modi’s foreign policy or his handling of foreign affairs was not flawless. No one’s is — as successive American Presidents have repeatedly demonstrated from Vietnam to Afghanistan. It probably had more misses than hits — though this writer is inclined to give him credit for more aces.
The jury is out on that, and only posterity will tell if he erred chronically or got a few things right. But all actions will have to be judged in the backdrop of a context.
The world in 2018 is not the same as it was even in 2013. There was no Trump then. Xi and Putin were not a shadow of their present self. As the new cold war — or the colder war with three superpowers — heats up, to use a contradictory metaphor, strategies have to be reinvented. Old templates won’t work anymore. It is only now that these issues are beginning to be addressed, in fora like the currently ongoing Raisina Dialogues, and new scripts are being written.
It would be unrealistic to expect India will hold the same sway over its South Asian neighbours as before. In Nepal, irrespective of who is in power — Oli or Prachanda — it would be wishful thinking to believe that the country will forever remain beholden to its big brother from the South and shun the Dragon of the North.
For all his disparaging remarks, Donald Trump knows he can't ignore India.
In navigating, course corrections will have to be made and mistakes will happen. No strategy can be foolproof. But the final test will be on where we land eventually.
At present, we have only some lead-and-lag indicators, or tea leaves, to read.
The purpose of this piece is neither to present a report card of Modi’s foreign policy performance, nor put up a defence for him. There are enough experts to praise or 'diss' him equally. But, on an overall appraisal, it would be unfair to say that he did poorly for a first-time Prime Minister, starting with a huge handicap both at home and abroad.

He can disparage Modi (like he does with many world leaders and his own predecessors) — but the US can no longer ignore India.
India is more active in the Middle East than before, with active channels open to the Arab world. We can deal with Iran in full public view without being apologetic about it — but the real jewels in Modi’s foreign policy cap are the relations he has forged with Israel and Japan. No one can miss the energy and vibes between Modi-Netanyahu and Modi-Abe.

No matter whether it is Sharif or Imran, it will always be the Pakistani Army and its deep state that will call the shots. While everyone will be watching the outcome in May 2019 with bated breath, Modi has succeeded in establishing that India is no longer a 'one party' democracy.

India now has a real alternative.

On Cow and Media’s bias
A lot of people have discussed cow politics ever since 2014. There are multiple factors to explore related to cow and the politics associated with it. But the most pertinent question is if Congress is any better than the BJP when it comes to cow politics. The mainstream media has painted the BJP as a regressive political party but is that the reality? As a matter of fact, protecting cow was mentioned in the directive principles of the constitution so this issue did not originate post-2014. However, going by media reports, it looks as if the cow was not an issue before 2014 but it only became an issue in BJP ruled states after 2014. What the media has often conveniently ignored is that even in Madhya Pradesh, Mr Kamal Nath invoked the National Security Act for cow slaughter. So, if you like your steak then you must know that the Congress is no different than the BJP when it comes to the question of beef and the politics of beef.

The fact that I can even suggest that the space to dissent in India is shrinking is a manifestation of the fact that my suggestion is an absolute lie. If the space to dissent had reduced, then how could we criticize the government as freely and routinely as we do?

There have been extensive articles that have suggested that minorities in India are feeling insecure and that the current government wants to treat them as second-class citizens by amending the constitution. Unfortunately, these articles are geared towards dividing the voters and shifting the focus from important issues such as development and economic growth. These articles lack data on the subject and conveniently ignore the reality of India. There is evidence that suggests that religious minority groups, specifically Muslims tend to be the poorest groups in India. Consequentially, given that the BJP has worked extensively towards the bottom 50 per cent of India’s population, a major chunk of this is the Muslim households that lacked necessities before 2019. Therefore, the current developmental discourse has provided our Muslim brothers with the much-needed resources that were their right but successive governments ignored them. On the data for religious violence, again, I am hoping that Citizen Raj will fill the much-needed gap and settle this debate once and for all. By providing a 10 per cent reservation for the economically weaker sections of the society, the government has in fact shown how it views Indians as Indians and not through the prism of caste or religion.
Earlier, reservations were only on the basis of caste and consequentially, religious minorities didn’t benefit from them but with this new policy, it will ensure that the benefit of reservation is also extended to them. Whether I believe in reservations as a tool to uplift people or not is a separate issue altogether but the only reason why I mentioned this is to illustrate how the “anti-minority” tag against the current government is laughable and a product of a carefully crafted branding strategy by the opposition that is devoid of facts. An important question is, if the opposition parties loved the minorities so much then why are most of them still poor, without a proper home, without an LPG connection or without electricity? Another important question is, if Modi hates non-Hindus, then why did he provide them with home, LPG and electricity in a record time of just 5 years?
There are multiple things that this government got right and there are multiple errors too that it has made but one has to compare a political party with other political parties. For all that the Modi government gets wrong, it gets at least twice as many things right. Be it a change in the nature of governance, eradication of corruption at the top level or delivery of basic services to all citizens of India.
India now has a government that not just shows up for work on time, but it actually works so my liberal friends, don’t fall for the propaganda of left-leaning digital propaganda websites masquerading as independent and objective journalism platforms. Look at data, at facts and then decide for yourself- do you want a government that delivers governance or do you want to go back to a government that only delivered Coalgate, 2G and the illustrious list of scams?

These are 2018 full budget numbers. ~24.5L cr is the Union Govt spend. As Govt earns only ~18 cr through so called GabbarSinghTax-es, It borrows ~6L Cr from market/prints money.
This causes Inflation, This gap between Tax receipts + other income vs total spend is our fiscal deficit.
With ~6L Cr was about ~3.3% of GDP in 2018. While we should aim at near Zero fiscal deficit, but given the spending need(coming to it), govt has to go this direction.
But Fiscal Deficit stokes Inflation.
Printing more INR through RBI increases money supply and in turn lead to devaluation of INR.

Talking about Kisan Budget mentioned in Manifesto, Price comes from demand and not vice-versa! Govt need to provide farmers with higher yields through higher food processing avenues, crop diversification, horticulture, White & Blue economy. Make farmer self-reliant!
Anyways, assuming that the crown prince dreams of ensuring a rural revival basis pure MSPs revision, let's add ~1L Cr for the price gap and the eventual rotten grains in IFCI godowns.
Folks, we are at ~8L Cr for these new schemes alone!
1Now let's revisit the Govt numbers again(2018 base):
Earning: ~17 L Cr
Borrowing: 7 L Cr
Spending 24 L Cr
Assuming govt doesn't want to go the Zimbabwe route, let's assume that borrowing remains at the same levels.
Assuming Fiscal Prudence, only 2 ways to fund RaGa's Manifesto:
1. Cut spending elsewhere
2. Increase earning by more Taxes
Talking about first one. Again look at below chart and think what will go?
Can you find even one area where we can cut spending from current levels. in fact, if you think we are under-spending on all of these areas due to financial constraints!
Still, what will RaGa take away if he has to?
Defense? Yes! remember our soldiers were starved for OROP & bullet proof jackets for decades. Important military up-gradation was delayed to leave defense in a fragile state. What else?
