After independence from the British Empire, Maharana Bhupal Singh merged his state into the Union of Rajasthan in April 1948, newly formed Union consisting of nine States and two Chief ships and the Maharana was appointed as the Rajpramukh. When other states also merged according to the policy of government of India; the Maharana was  personally appointed as the Maharaj Pramukh of Rajasthan, for his life time only.

How Maharana Bhupal Singh of Mewar foiled the plans of Nawab Hamidullah Khan of Bhopal & Jinnah to integrate Bhopal and many princely states falling in between Pakistan and Bhopal.

"When he was presented with the "Bhopal Plan"

Maharana Bhupal Singhji has given this statement on the proposal to merge Mewar into Pakistan: -

"My ancestors have decided centuries ago where Mewar will be located in the Indian continent. If they had betrayed the country, I would have inherited a princely state like Hyderabad today. But neither did my ancestors and neither i will do that"

18 April 1948

Udaipur was merged in united Rajasthan and Maharana Bhupal Singh was made "Rajpramukh" of One of the most diverse Indian states having fantastic heritage of Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha - all four Purusharthas.

January 14, 1949

Sardar Patel came to Udaipur and met Maharana Bhupal Singh

Maharana urged him to take his seat, but he did not accept and with folded hands requested that "We have come to take you to Delhi, take the throne there. Due to the sacrifices given by your ancestors in the welfare of the country this opportunity has come. "

Not many know that at the instance of late Maharana Bhupal Singh of Mewar (Udaipur), the Sardar during a visit to the Lake City to meet the Maharana and Congress leaders of the state after Independence attended the historic meeting on January 14,1949 and discussed the issue of formation of the new state - Rajasthan, earlier known as Rajputana.

The Maharana was bitter when the Sardar initiated merger of the princely states in the country as it resulted in the loss of their kingdoms. When the meeting was arranged, the Maharana insisted that the Sardar should come to Udaipur as he would not go to Delhi to discuss the issue of the new state. In the meeting presided by the Sardar himself, late chief minister Mohan Lal Sukhadia, Manikya Lal Verma, Gokul Lal Asawa,Bhure Lal Baya and several leaders were present.

The state was then known as Rajputana, a name given by the British and insisted to be continued by the Sardar, who was then the home minister of the country.

"However, during the meeting, the idea of Rajasthan was suggested by the Maharana, a new name coming from a bank that the Maharana had floated then. He said the bank was given the name of Bank of Rajasthan as the state was ruled by Rajas and Maharjas.

The Maharana said Rajputana sounded a little imperial and as if only the Rajputs live in it. He insisted that the state has people from all 36 kaum (caste and communities) and at best it can be called Rajasthan,"

veteran journalist Vijay Bhandari, who was a collegian then at Udaipur, said. The Bank Of Rajasthan Ltd., was established at Udaipur on May 8, 1943. The credit for the birth of the bank goes to the then finance minister of the erstwhile Mewar Government, late Rai Bahadur P C Chatterji, who also gave the bank its name when it started doing flourishing business. The bank which became a brand to reckon with was later taken over by ICICI Bank.

The Sardar readily accepted the suggestion of the Maharana and it was decided to rechristen Rajputana as Rajasthan.

1 April, 1949

Maharana Bhupal Singh now was called as Maharaj Pramukh of New Rajasthan.

It is worth mentioning that after independence the Sajjan Infantry and Bhupal Infantry created by Maharana Sajjan Singh (r. 1874-1884 CE) and Maharana Bhupal Singh (r. 1930-1955 CE) were merged in the Indian Army Regiment of 9 Grenadiers (Mewar). Therefore Mewar still owns special position in the country as this infantry carries its name.

Maharana Bhupal Singh on his way to viewing Gangaur festivities

His Highness Maharana Bhupal Singh of Mewar (Udaipur) State, reigned for nearly 18 years with extraordinary intelligence, eloquence, remarkable abilities, and great success.

Maharana Bhupal Singh is the first in the House of Mewar to have his entire life documented through photographs & is remembered for his commitment to preserving cultural heritage through supporting arts & promotion of education.

Our beloved & generous Maharana Bhupal Singh Ji is very less discussed, he didn't possessed the daunting physical strength of his father but he was humble, full of humility & compassion for the people of Mewar.

He showed everyone a softer and more benevolent side of Mewar.

Koti koti Naman to this worthy descendant of esteemed list of Resprcted Eklingnath Deewans.
